We completed our review for our first semester Final Exam today by revisiting the Common Assessment #5 Preview.

I also passed out our First Semester Final Review today, to give you a chance to get a head start over the weekend. It is a comprehensive review of every standard we've learned (and mastered) this year, and looks very similar to your Final Exam.

Tues 12/3

We learned how to complete work together problems today using Notes #39. This was a hard lesson, and may require some extra work on your own to become comfortable with the concepts and proficient with all the problems.

I'd recommend spending some extra time with the notes tonight, especially the examples we didn't get to in class today. Purple Math, About.com, and Dr. Math are all great resources as well. Good luck and work hard!

Monday 12/2

Today we learned how to add and subtract rational expressions with unlike denominators with Notes #22.


The key thing to remember is that you must first find a common denominator. Factoring the denominators helps you find the LCD, which will save you time! After that, just follow the same process as we learned before the Thanksgiving break.

Today we started multiplying rational expressions.  To do that, we factor everything and then cancel common factors from the numerator and denominator.

Tuesday 11/19

Today we learned how to divide with rational expressions in Notes #20.  To divide by a fraction we listen to the dyslexic colonel who would say, KCF. Keep the first fraction the same, Change the division to multiplication, and Flip the second rational number (reciprocal).  We then carry the problem out as a multiplication problem.

Tuesday 11/12

Welcome to the wonderful world of rational expressions! We used Notes #18 today to learn what rationals expressions are and how to simplify them.

Remember that the goal is to factor each polynomial, but that we use different techniques depending on whether or not it's a monomial, binomial, or trinomial. A solid understanding all of these vocabulary terms is essential to navigating this topic successfully!

Wednesday 10/30

Today we rolled up our sleeves and dove headfirst into the quadratic formula with Notes #15. This is now the fourth different technique we've learned to solve quadratic equations, and you need to be able to handle all four proficiently.

We'll also be having a "surprise" quiz tomorrow with exactly one question. Please make sure to memorize the quadratic formula tonight so you'll be able to get the one question on tomorrow's quiz correct.

Today we continued to look at mod math to get us ready to work on our project which we will start tomorrow.

Solve the following equations mod 26
1x = 1
3x = 1
5x = 1
7x = 1
9x = 1
11x = 1
15x = 1
17x = 1
19x = 1
21x = 1
23x = 1
25x = 1

I gave you a hint and some solutions. The solutions are {1,3,5,7,9,11,15,17,19,21,23,25} but not in that order. We discovered in class that 21*5 = 1 mod 26 and 5*21 = 1 mod 26

Sorry about the delay in this post, but having Tech issues about posting the preview quiz but it appeared that most were up to speed on the preview questions.  Question #13  appeared to cause concerns toconvert from Celsius to Farenheit, use this equation:

F = (C x 9/5) + 32 ...or... F = (C x 1.8) + 32

Review your notes and also be prepared to solve inequalities!

Today we learned how to solve inequalities. To solve an inequality, you treat that inequality symbol as if it was an equal sign and solve that "equation"Be sure to flip the inequality symbol anytime you multiply or divide by a negative.

For example:  -2x + 4 < 12
                     -2x + 4 = 12
                            -4    -4
                           -2x = 8
                            -2    -2
                             x > -4

Tuesday 10/1

Today we continued solving equations.  Remember to follow all four steps:

  1. Distribute
  2. Move all variables to one side and combine.
  3. Move all constants to the other side and combine.
  4. Solve for the variable (by dividing).
We also looked at solving equations that end in an identity ( 0 = 0, has infinite solutions) and equations that have no solution (0 = any constant other than 0).

Monday 9/23

Today we graded and worked out a few of the answers from the test we took last Friday (9/20).  We then worked on a puzzle in class that required us to review and practice factoring out gcfs, factoring trinomials of the form x^2 + bx + c, and factoring trinomials of the form ax^2 + bx + c.

We do not have homework this evening.

Our second common assessment is this Thursday 9/26.  The rest of the week will be dedicated to reviewing for the assessment.  Our goal is to have every member of the class score 100% on the test!
